Catalan Cuisine by Colman Andrews
This is an excellent book that goes far beyond its "cookbook"
format. In Catalonia it is often difficult to separate "food"
and "culture", and Colman Andrews has managed to merge the recipes
into their social and culinary contexts. The only omission in what is obligatory
reading for anyone interested in the Mediterranean diet is perhaps a very
light treatment of local wines. Whilst he translates spirit of the local proverb "menjar
sense vi, menjar mesquí" perfectly as "Eat wineless,
eat lousy", the books focus is solid, rather than liquid. One hopes
that Mr Colman will be moved to write another book based on wines, but in
the meantime we cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The Wild Bunch by Patrick Matthews
Subtitled "Great wines from small producers", the book is a look at distinctive wineries around the world. Whilst there is a certain move to uniformity in the wine world (particularly in supermarket wine), Matthews has specifically sought out producers striving to produce distinctive wines bearing the imprint of their region, soil or climate. The book is well-researched and mostly very well written. My only slight criticism might be a lack of overall completeness, as fascinating subjects are touched on, and not always followed through to their end. Nonetheless, as it stands it makes fascinating reading and is a worthy addition to any wine lovers library.

Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell
George Orwell's personal account of his experiences during the Spanish civil war, where he fought on the republican side. Orwell went to Barcelona intending to write newspaper articles, but "joined the militia almost immediately, because at that time and in that atmosphere it seemed the only conceivable thing to do". Orwell paints a tragic picture of this complex war, the failed Barcelona revolution, and what moved him to take part.

Teach Yourself Catalan by Alan Yates
Slightly academic, but thorough introduction to the Catalan language. Going well beyond what you would expect from a phase book, this course could give you a basic grounding in the Catalan language if you work through it. Even if you don't get all the way through it, do take the time to look at the phonetics section at the beginning of the book. Contains word lists.
